Last week I watched Miami Vice, the movie. I liked it. It is one of those bad movies that I enjoy watching. Watching it prompted me to add all the Miami Vice DVDs in my Netflix queue. I received the first one three days ago and I did not stop watching them. Three to five episodes a day (a good plan considering how cold and overcast it is outside... winter in the Twin Cities is good for hibernating and nothing else; forget the ice-fishing, ice-skating and all that stuff).
Why do I like Miami Vice? It was the first violent show I saw on TV. I was shocked by the amount of violence shown in every episode. It was the first program on TV that was real about crime and police-work.
Its music was phenomenal for its time. Phill Collins, Duran Duran, all the major artists in that time. Even Cindy Lauper playing "Girls just wanna have fun". Michael Mann got Phill Collins to play "In the air tonight" for the pilot. Quite an accomplishment for a pilot. Keep in mind that at that time Phill had been playing with Genesis for over twelve years and had been leading the band for over five years.
Michael Mann is a director that is very good doing the photography of the movies. He is excellent capturing the smells and colors of the cities. And he did an excellent job with Miami Vice. The photography shown in the program is outstanding.
We'll talk more about Don Johnson and his character Sonny Crockett in our "Role Model of the month" section.
